Afro Haircare on a Budget.
By Chantel Lewis
Afro hair is a hair type that is common for women of African and Caribbean descent. It resembles a curl pattern but is tighter and thicker. If this is your hair type, I have five tips and tricks on how to protect your crown and keep it healthy, strong and moisturised with items you will find in your kitchen!
Lemons are high in Vitamin C and help encourage hair growth by promoting collagen. They are known for treating dandruff and an itchy scalp, and their acidic nature tightens the hair follicles.
TIP: Using a cotton pad, apply fresh lemon juice to your scalp and let it sit for 15-20 minutes then rinse with a mild shampoo for the best results. Repeat this twice a week.
2- HONEY
Honey is a multitasker and helps naturally lighten your hair and keeps it conditioned which will help prevent breakage. Therefore, your hair will stay strong, healthy and grow longer.
TIP: Mix honey and water in a bowl and gently massage the mix onto your scalp, then leave for 1-2 hours. Rinse with water and a mild shampoo. Do this at least once a week for the best results.
3- EGGS
Eggs are also known as 'hair food' as they contain fatty acids, nutrients, and protein to the hair. They help reduce hair loss, stop dryness and breakage, and control dandruff. Egg yolks are also very good for your hair as they are loaded with vitamins that keep your hair healthy and nourished. They are also high in sulphur which helps keep your scalp smelling fresh and staying healthy.
TIP: Separate the egg yolks from the whites (you do not need the whites). Then, mix the egg yolks and olive oil. Next, apply the mixture to damp hair and let it sit for 20 minutes. After the 20 minutes use a mild shampoo and rinse with cold water. Do this at least twice a week to achieve nourished and shiny hair.
4- COCONUT OIL
Coconut oil stimulates hair growth penetrating the follicles. It can be used as a leave-in conditioner because it restores hair moisture as well as preventing hair breakage and split ends.
TIP: Apply coconut oil from the root to the tip and leave for 30 minutes. The longer you leave it the better the results. Do this at least twice a week for the best results.
5- CASTOR OIL
TIP: Mix castor oil and coconut oil in a bowl. Apply the mix to dry hair and massage into your scalp. Leave for 10-15 minutes, then rinse with shampoo. Do this at least twice a week to see the best results.
